P300 BRAIN EEG ENIGMA SYSTEM BY THOUGHT TECHNOLOGY...

The idea that the “mental impulse” and the efficiency of the “safety pin cycle” could be assessed has been a theoretical ideal – until now. Thanks to a major breakthrough in brain science technology developed in conjunction with Dr Jay Holder of the Holder Research Institute and the world’s leading biofeedback and psychophysiological instrument manufacture Thought Technology, the hardware and software now exists to measure the power and efficiency of the inward and outward transmission of information within the very heart of the central nervous system.

The model of the safety pin cycle was proposed and developed by our pioneers DD and BJ Palmer, and RW Stephenson, and described the afferent and efferent loops of the nervous system with the concomitant perception and cognition within brain cell and tissue cell. Since that time chiropractic has struggled to come to grips with this model and has failed to find the means to assess our therapeutic techniques’ ability to impact neural efficiency. Some have even proposed discarding such ideals and have suggested our focus should been confined to pain management – a less significant component of neural dysfunction.

BJ Palmer attempted to measure the mental impulse with the invention of the electroencephaloneuromentimpograph – what fundamentally was a predecessor to modern EEG technologies. Only recently chiropractor researchers have revived an interest in the use of brain EEG as a tool to measure the outcomes of chiropractic intervention, the shortfall in the tools being used being due to their primarily qualitative nature.

More objective and quantitative measures are the N100 and P300 which are components of EEG data that have required the combination of expensive and specialised EEG hardware, and then time consuming analysis by a highly paid and trained brain EEG professional. Forty five minutes of data collection and analysis for the clinician and an extremely tedious and uncomfortable experience for the subject!

That was until Dr Jay Holder and Thought Technology discovered the short cut to extracting this same information and much more, in just five minutes, using a minimum of leads and connections: A massive win-win for both practitioner and subject…

Both the N100 and P300 can be assessed for latency and amplitude, what might otherwise be described as efficiency and power. The N100 is a measure of the afferent path of the safety pin cycle – the perception of a stimulus – the ability of the nervous system to effectively perceive the environment. The P300 is a measure of the efferent path of the safety pin cycle – cognition resulting from perception of a stimulus – the ability of the nervous system to effectively respond to the environment.

What does this mean in real and practical terms? As a practitioner you can connect your patient to the Enigma hardware, connected to a laptop, with just three leads to attach, have the patient complete five minutes of responding to an auditory stimulus, and then the findings are immediately available for viewing and reporting. As a patient, you just have to sit down for five minutes with one lead attached to your scalp (and two others to your ear lobes) and press a button when you hear a particular sound, and then you are done!

N100 refers to a neural activity spike 100msecs after an evoked potential during an Electroencephalograph analysis. This reaction demonstrates the timing and strength of perception of a stimulus. Delay or weakness in this response equates to inattention; in chiropractic subluxation language – Dysafferentation. P300 refers to a neural activity spike 300msecs after an evoked potential. This reaction demonstrates the timing and strength of the cognitive response to the stimulus; in chiropractic subluxation language – Dysponesis.

The Enigma promises to be a major breakthrough in both research and clinical practice offering the perfect technology to assess changes in neural and more importantly brain function as the result of chiropractic adjustments. Just as BJ Palmer insisted that every DC should own a neurocalometer, I would suggest that every Chiropractor practicing in the 21st century should own an Enigma...
